The Black Panther Lives!

If you have ever heard me speak at an event, you may have heard me sneak in a reference to my favorite movie of all-time, Black Panther. It’s an easy reference to make when either speaking about cultural responsiveness or instructional design. Here’s the summary of my love for the film: most other black superheroes are heroes of the hood. Black Panther is T’Challa, King of Wakanda!

A King Has Fallen

Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of Black Panther was absolutely amazing. He represented someone, that represented something. T’Challa was a king who acted with dignity, was humble though royalty, and who was supported by an entire family of regal warriors. Chadwick Boseman brought this character to life. He didn’t just play the part, he emobieded it!

The Problems of Wakanda Are Real

Spoiler alert, if you have not seen the film yet, I am about to give away some of the themes of the film. Don’t worry though, the main subplot will not be given away, but the the question must be asked, why have you not seen Black Panther yet?! Watch the movie and you will realize that many of the problems exposed throughout the narrative include: Isolationism, Classism, Sexism, Ageism, Colonialism and Racism. If you look at our own society today you will see that these problems are far from fictional. They are real, and they need to be combated.
